"Maka‘ika‘i Ma Loko O Lahaina"
A Journey Through Lahaina's Past
Immerse yourself in the traditions of Hawai‘i by joining knowledgeable Maui Nei guides in "A Journey Through Lahaina's Past." The story begins over 1700 years ago with the arrival of the first Polynesian settlers.
Global migrations come alive at Keawaiki, the town’s harbor and historic gateway. Learn of ancient voyages, religious temples, sacred Hawaiian Kings, and the beginnings of western contact. Visit archeological sites and monuments left by Hawaiians, missionaries, whalers, merchants and plantation owners.
Hawaiian mo‘olelo (traditions) bring to life the various eras of Lahaina's history and culture. Visit the final resting place of those who contributed to this colorful past and conclude the tour at the site of one of Hawai’i’s most sacred royal residences, Moku‘ula, where you will witness the rejuvenation of Hawaiian culture through Hawaiian eyes.
Moku‘ula has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior since 1997. The Moku‘ula restoration project has received a Certificate of Commendation from the American Association for State and Local History. The AASLH awards program is the nation's most prestigious competition for recognition of achievement in local, state and regional history.
Maui Nei is the only tour company who is in partnership with a non-profit organization (The Friends of Moku‘ula). Together they are dedicated to the restoration of Moku‘ula at Lahaina, Maui.
Our unique award-winning journey is an experience of a lifetime, traveled by a privileged few.
